Date Night at Horus on A

So last Friday was date night for me and the mans, and him being such a great bf he brought me flowers (prob helps that's I've been harping about it) but anywhoooo he wanted to be surprised with where we would eat at.  So after trolling Living Social I came across an offer for the Horus Cafe on ave A.   The deal included two glasses of wine, two appetizers, two entrees and two deserts.  I picked it because they have belly dancing shows on Fridays (which we missed).

So after picking me up from work we headed on down to Ave A in the LES and promptly got seated.  Its your typical middle eastern décor, beige walls, Moroccan style lamps, and these awesome copper top tables.  The café as has hookah service as well, being a former smoker I passed.  So we got hummus (extra), Moroccan cigars and a Greek salad to share.  Nom, nom, nom is all I can say.  There was enough in appetizers we were kinda full by the time the food rolled around.  For entrees the bf got lamp chops with a potato gratin and I got chicken royal.  His chops were delish!  The potato’s were so creamy and tasty and complimented well with grilled veggies.  My chicken was moist and flavorful and served in what was an Alfredo sauce and a side of sautéed spinach with CHUNKS of garlic.  I mean who DOESN’T love garlic? For desert we got baklava, which was eh.  My bf was burnt and mines was kinda cooked, plus it was served with whipped cream and drizzled in chocolate (strange bedfellows).  We did get coffee to wash it all down and MAN was it strong (which was nice and have the BF buzzing).

Overall great laid back ambiance with a noise level that makes it way to talk to your party without screaming.  Most everything was good so I’d say like 3.5 out of 5 forks.  So if your looking for something off the beaten path and a little different give it a try.

Buenos Aires

So Friday I was feigning for some beef, if ya know what I mean...and I had heard about this Argentinean steakhouse downtown over on 6th St and Ave A.   So off me and the novio went for some steak and quality time.  I had read about this place and been meaning to make my way on down. Since I got out early we got there before the dinner rush.  The place has exposed brink that is covered with pennants from various footbol (aka soccer to us Anglos) leagues.   There was also TV's broadcasting the games.  As the dinner crowd showed up the candles came out and the lights went down.  The service was good, our waiter had more personality then the hostess and was great about keeping up with us.  We started with bread and butter, and he ordered the beef kabobs and I got the skirt steak with mashed potatoes.  A note, if you are not a serious meat eater, I would avoid this place as the Argentineans are KNOWN  for beef.

And we were not disappointed either.  My steak came with the traditional chimichurri sauce and was cooked to perfection (medium well).   My novio's kabobs were tender and juicy and easy to eat.  Because nothing is worse than getting meat that is just this said of rawhide..... Overall the meat was tender and juicy and seasoned well.  Even my boyfriend was impressed with the tenderness of the meat.  Now of course if you have learned anything its that I also need desert.  So one panqueque de manzana y cafe coming up!  We got the apple crepe with ice cream and two coffees.   And man the coffee tasted like someone's abuela put their ankles in it, sock and all (which is a good thing ask any Hispanic).  Overall the food was great and the service was decent.  I'd give it 4 out of 5 forks and cant wait to go back.

Peeling away the hunger

So yesterday the BF and I were in the LES and of course we were hungry (like what's new right?). Right there on the corner of Bowery and 2nd ave is a quaint eatery called Peels. It's described as classic American food.  Unlike most places this actually had a second floor on which we took our repast. (Sorry I've been reading vampire novels again). The interior is early American decor, traditional pressed tin roof, unfinished wood tables and benches, slate blue gray ways with white trim. I order the flapjacks with fresh fruit and the BF ordered the build-a-biscuit.  We got coffee which was tasty and not harsh. The flapjacks were huge taking ip the entire plate, and light brown.  The biscuit was crumby and his eggs looks cooked to perfection. The service left a bit to be desired but hey such is life. Sadly I was so hungry I forgot to take photos o the food. A cute spot 3.5 out of 5 forks

The Boil

So Friday night my BF surprised me by taking me to a place that I had pointed out a couple weeks ago located on Chrystie St down on the LES.  The overall ambiance is cozy and efficient ( i mean your peeling shellfish lol) but down in woods and reds.  The table has butcher paper on it for easy clean up and they give you buckets to put the shells into.  The service was ok, I think that our waitress was getting annoyed with us, maybe its cause I was hangry lol.  To start we got the gumbo which was ok but needed some hot sauce. We ordered the crayfish and lobster bucket done in old bay (there really is no other way to eat it) and it came with baby crayfish, a lobster (whole), potatoes that were over cooked, a earn of corn and andouille sausage.  The food was coated in the old bay and I made my own dipping sauce which the waitress looked at me crazy when I asked for mayonnaise.  Overall something you should do once but having grown up on the bayou in Louisiana i know how crayfish need to be cooked and this was over done.  I would give 2.5 out of 5 forks.

Souvlaki GR in the LES

So last night me and the boothang were in the LES looking for some Mediterranean food and what should we spy but souvlaki GR.  So in we went and it was like being teleported into to the photos of Santorini Greece. It was a a small space as are almost all NYC restaurants. They even had a patio that was draped in bougainvillaea. The menu was short and straightforward which is how it should be.We started with the tzatziki and pita, and it was made with the Greek yogurt and cucumbers thick and creamy.  I ordered the chicken souvlaki and Mr. ordered the veggie pita. The chicken I think could have been cooked a bit more as I didn't feel it was cooked all the way. It was juicy and very flavorful and came with a side of warmed pita bread.Mr boothang said the veggie pita was great (but it looked mostly like pita lol). Of course what meal isn't complete with out dessert!Of course the offer loukamadies with honey and nuts, I died.  I noticed that they even offered frappes with Bailey's (which if you have ever hung with a Greek this is a staple of all table fare). The service was friendly but slow as there was only three servers and no one followed up with us to see how we were doing other than the busboy.Overall 3.5 put of 5 forks just because of the service but def a most go.

Pride brunch

So yesterday I met up with my gays an a friend who was visiting from Texas. We decided to have brunch at Schillers on rivington.  The place was small and vintage with a pressed tin roof, frosted glass and wood tables. I of course ordered huevos rancheros, there was an order of French toast, croquette Monsieur and an omelette. Sadly mines was served all in one cast Iron skillet so the corn tortilla was soggy. The home fries were done with opinions but mushy. The blood orange mimosa was tasty and the service ok. Overall 2 out of 5 forks.
