Show your support

Hey blog world I'm running a fundraiser on my boutique for Breast cancer since I know a few people that have been affected by this. 20% of the total purchase will be donated to the Susan G Komen foundation. So I ask that everyone take a moment and make a purchase and share this with your friends. All purchases over $50 by 8/20 will be entered to win $25 off their next purchase over $75. When checking out enter "Raquel" at checkout and thank you for your support.  This cancer has affected my aunt and many personal friends, I'm sure you know someone who has been affected.
Thanks!

❤❤ rice pudding?

Then if you do (and you live in NYC) then head over to Rice to Riches on Spring St. I wasn't in love with rice pudding till I ate here a few years ago and decided that my BF needed to experience the awesomeness of rice pudding. The charm lies in all the ridiculous saying that line the wall of the restaurant, not to mention the flavors of pudding.  I of course went with man-made marscapone which has bing cherries in it.  Delish!!! Its a fun place to check out woth friends or a date. so i give 4 out of 5 forks

The Boil

So Friday night my BF surprised me by taking me to a place that I had pointed out a couple weeks ago located on Chrystie St down on the LES.  The overall ambiance is cozy and efficient ( i mean your peeling shellfish lol) but down in woods and reds.  The table has butcher paper on it for easy clean up and they give you buckets to put the shells into.  The service was ok, I think that our waitress was getting annoyed with us, maybe its cause I was hangry lol.  To start we got the gumbo which was ok but needed some hot sauce. We ordered the crayfish and lobster bucket done in old bay (there really is no other way to eat it) and it came with baby crayfish, a lobster (whole), potatoes that were over cooked, a earn of corn and andouille sausage.  The food was coated in the old bay and I made my own dipping sauce which the waitress looked at me crazy when I asked for mayonnaise.  Overall something you should do once but having grown up on the bayou in Louisiana i know how crayfish need to be cooked and this was over done.  I would give 2.5 out of 5 forks.

A La Siagon

So on Monday I had a day job over in the financial district and came across this gem.  I was on the hunt for great Vietnamese food, specifically bun.  Its noodles served with grilled chicken, cucumbers, lettuce and peanuts and is the best thing ever.  Small place (surprise!) but tasty and fresh.  Overall 3 out of 5 forks so when in the area walk over and check it out.

Robin Hoods Stylish Headscarves

So today while strolling through the web I came across this company that makes headscarves for women who are going through cancer or have serious hair loss.  I was moved as I personally know of women who are battling cancer and might need these.  The premise of the company is this "Tracey founded Robin Hoods upon her belief that no woman should be deprived of her self-confidence, dignity, and natural beauty as a result of hair hardship. Pairing the highest quality materials and thoughtful design, she created a product that appeals to women of all ages and style sensibilities, and makes the wearer look- and subsequently feel- better."
WOW!  What a great idea and cause. As any female will tell you our hair is a major factor in our identity and self confidence when that is gone we struggle.  So share this if you know someone fighting cancer or might be interested.

Need an asssitant?

So recently I had the pleasure of attending a meetup even hosted by a high school classmate of mine who has launched her own business called PA for a Day.  The premise of this is that if you need help for a day or more you pay a small fee (starting at $20 an hour) and you can have your own personal assistant.  This person will pick up laundry, groceries, walk your dogs or do anything that you cant get to in the course of the day.  Click on the link below for more info and tell her Jessica sent you!

Intermezzo

So today I lost my bet, and took myself out for a nice Italian dinner in Chelsea.  I stopped in a spot called Intermezzo and it was worth it.  As with most NYC spots small space but done in clean classic lines and colors.  Food was fresh and done well, plus they were what serving sizes should be, just enough to fill you up.  I ordered the caprese ensalda (mozzarella, tomatoes, EVOO, and balsamic vinegar), penne a la vodka, and of course creme brulee.  The noodles were a la dente and the salad fresh.  As far as the creme brulee, you could tell they had just pulled it from the fridge and caramelized the sugar mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  Overall 4 out 5 forks.

Real Street Fashion

So since I have started blogging and following various "fashionistas"and "street style" I have noticed that I feel I have unrealistic expectations of what my everyday fashion should be. Now I’m not knocking these lovely ladies, as lord knows that they are my inspiration to get up every day and put my best face/foot forward, but sometimes I’m like everyday people don’t dress like this. I commute everyday for work, and I'll be dammed if I’m wearing heels to walk to and from the train to work. Like most women I wear sneakers and change at work. I often look at these pictures and wish that I was smaller, or taller, or had a better job to afford name brands. I wish that I could be that woman in heels standing at the trainstation or walking down the cobble stone streets on Soho. But I’m not, I’m an everyday girl who wears sneakers to work, dresses in a mix of name brands and sample sale items, who works a 9 to 5. So what does that mean? It means that I take what I see from these other bloggers and try to interpret it for me. I know that some trends don’t work for my body (i.e. peplum ::shivers:: I am a 40DDD, doesn’t look good on me) but I try to show what an everyday working girl interprets as fashion. I hope that you like what I post and you too take some inspiration from what I write about. Like most women I have a complicated relationship with my body image, but I am at a place where I feel good about how I look overall and I know that for being 32 I am pretty damn sexy. As women we are given unrealistic expectations about what beauty should be from mainstream media and allow it to shape how we see ourselves. So ladies I ask that you step back take a deep breath and focus on what you find sexy, be it your dimples when you smile, your shoulders, or the crease in your elbow. But take a moment and realize that you are sexy and no one else should ever define that for you.

Enough of my soap box, but here are some things that inspire me to look good everyday and make the effort. So follow and read fashion posts, blogs, videos and tell me how you interpret it for you.  And thanks to google  and fashionclimaxx for providing me with pictures :)  Like I said these pics inspire me to be better dressed everyday, so thanks to all the fashion bloggers.

The ness app

Ok foodies here's an app that you need to download stat! It's called Ness and it creates a food profile based on places you eat at and makes recommendations. Also you can write reviews and follow others with similar tastes. Def one of the better food apps I've used. It lead to me a great little mexican taqueria. Now go!

The Trailer Park

Ever just want to get away and look at Americana curios? Then head on over to the Trailer Park on 23th and 8th!  They have expanded their menu a bit to include vegetarian fare now.  The whole selling point for me was the tater tots and the toilet outside that is used for cigarette butts lol. Over all the food is good (the nachos are the bomb!! like 4 forks), I don't recommend the moon pies as they are on the dry side.  The burgers have the right amount of grease and flavor best followed by tater tots.  If you do go be prepared for a bit of a wait as this is a fairly popular place with locals and seating is limited.  Overall i give the place 4 out of 5 forks.
